History

The current Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (DBBM) was initially established as a Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics (DBB). The DBBM currently has 22 professors, all with the title of doctor. Our professors have obtained the doctorate in different Universities: UFG, UnB, UFRJ, UNIFESP, USP, UNESP, UNICAMP, UFU, Nottingham University, University of Oviedo. The DBBM actively participates in teaching, research and extension. At the undergraduate level the DBBM attends 17 different courses (Agronomy, Nursing, Veterinary, Medicine, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Biological Sciences, Biomedicine, Zootechny, Food Engineering, Medical Physics, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology, Forestry Engineering). At its origin DBB taught Biochemistry and Biophysics classes. Currently DBBM teaches several disciplines: Biomolecules, Cellular Metabolism, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Biophysics, Molecular Diagnostics, Metabolic Biochemistry, Biosafety, Biochemical Engineering, Bioinformatics, Experimental Biochemistry, Topics in Biochemistry, Biophysics Topics, Genomic and Proteomics, Fundamentals of genetic engineering, Genetic improvement of microorganisms. At the postgraduate level the DBBM attends to 9 different courses, in 5 different units of the UFG. In therms of research, DBBM mainly works in the areas of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Enzymology, Biochemistry of microorganisms, Biophysics, Genetics of microorganisms, Genomics, Proteomics, Host-parasite interaction, Protein and Peptide chemistry and Biochemistry teaching. In the extension field, DBBM participates in projects of EAD, Teaching of biochemistry and Dissemination of science.
